Help for the Alternative Desktop for Arachne

About this Alternative Desktop

This alternative to the "official" Arachne desktop arose initially out of a need to find a way to add more functions to Arachne and to create a coherent set of links to those functions.   The exercise of editing existing Arachne files is not for everyone, so I set about creating something to make it simpler for all.

But, one thing leads to another !

Once the "link adder" (ad2file) was under way and working, this project has taken on a life of its own, and so we have come to this "Alternative Desktop", which is still very much a "work in progress".

One thing I wanted to try was to give the user an opportunity to change the desktop wallpaper.   And that is now available - you can even add your own images to the gallery.   Just copy them into this subdirectory and run the "Refresh Wallpaper Display" to get them listed.

I am sure that more functionality will be added as time permits, and I will be looking to create a webpage for this project.

BTW: The original Arachne Desktop is still there, it just has a link to this Desktop added to it.

Help with Wallpaper

The wallpaper, used in the files ADT.HTM, ADTCONF.HTM and This Page, is set and/or changed by you, from the ADTCONF.HTM page.

From the Configuration screen, click on Choose a Wallpaper.
You will be presented with a selection of images from within the arachne\adt directory.

Scroll through them until you find one you like. Then right-click on the NAME of the image (NOT the image itself) to place it into clip.tmp, and scroll back up to the top of the image gallery. Click on the link click here and the three HTM files will be re-written with your chosen image as their wallpaper.

If the new graphic doesn't immediately become the new wallpaper, then clearing the cache may be required.

I have started the wallpaper collection with a few fractal images I created, but I know they won't appeal to everyone.

You can add your own background images for wallpaper, just by copying your graphics into the arachne\adt directory. Bitmap (.BMP), JPEG (.JPG) and GIF (.GIF) are all accepted.

Be sure to run the Refresh Wallpaper Display to put your new images into the gallery, and to remove from the display any images that you have deleted.

How to Add a New Link to "My Extra Pages"

Extra links may be added to the Alternative Desktop, at the bottom of the "My Extra Pages" section.

All you have to do is place the actual link into clip.tmp by right-clicking on the link with a mouse, or placing the cursor over the link and pressing Shift+Enter if you are mouse-less.     Then go to the "configure" page (adtconf.htm) and click on the Add a New Link to My Extra Pages button.

You will be asked to type in the link name that you want to be visible on the Alternative Desktop.   Leaving the name blank and just pressing Enter will cancel the operation.

A word of caution: The listings on the Alternative Desktop are not intended to replace the Hotlist, so be very selective in what you include in this section.   Try to include only those links which have a legitimate place on a Desktop, and avoid adding links that are likely to be of only transient interest.

How to Delete a Link from "My Extra Pages"

Links may also be deleted from the "My Extra Pages" section.

Place the actual link into clip.tmp by right-clicking on the link with a mouse, or placing the cursor over the link and pressing Shift+Enter if you are mouse-less.

Then go to the "configure" page (adtconf.htm) and click on the Delete a Link from My Extra Pages button.

You will be shown the link you have chosen and asked to confirm (or not) by pressing the Y or N key.     Any other key will be ignored.

If you have deleted a link in error, there is NO "undo" option, except to re-create that link.

If you have chosen to delete a link from outside of the "My Extra Pages" section, you will find the link will remain intact.
Those links are protected.
